So we left Caye Caulker on December 2nd, and took a water taxi with 3 guys that we met in our hostel, to Belize City. From there we bused to San Ignacio where our first stop was two ancient Mayan ruins sites. They are still excavating many of the sites, and archaeologists still cannot figure out what caused the downfall of their civilization. The structures are amazing, and so hard to comprehend how people thousands of years ago could construct such things. This specific site is a Mayan city called Xunantunich (the X is pronounced like a Z). The view was amazing. The second site we went to (below) did not include views like this, but it was more interesting because it was a maze of rooms, staircases, and hallways all made out of stone.
It also had a drainage system
which I found so interesting. It was more like a city and if it hadn't rained and made things so slippery I probably would have suggested an intense game of hide and seek. Just kidding! These sites are purely educational;)

Hi Trisha!

Glad to hear you all made it to Belize safely. Your first night sounded like it was a bit of an adventure! Hope all is well teaching down there. Tonight (Tuesday the 9th) we are expecting a winter storm warning and Edmonton has a blizzard warning. I'm in Alberta until the 23rd - the other ladies have all made it to Oceania/SE Asia for pre-travel before the teaching begins in early-February.

Say hello to Katie and Melissa for me. Take care and I'll keep up with your blog!

Hey Trish,

I've been keeping close tabs on your trip and all the amazing adventures you're experiencing! It looks and sounds like you're learning so much and really taking in all that Belize has to offer! It also looks like you couldn't have picked 2 BETTER travel buddies.
The pics are beautiful, and quite tempting to get my butt in gear with saving to travel! Work hard in your practicum, but don't forget to breathe and have some fun at the end of the day! Keep smiling girl. We miss you back in Alberta. In the words of Imani Copola (singer - don't know the correct spelling) ... "Keep ya head up girl, keep ya head up!"

Lovin ya,
Drea
